2019 was a record-breaking 10th anniversary year for She’s the First.

Last year’s success gave us the resilience we needed in 2020, to tackle the risks girls are facing in the wake of COVID-19. With schools shut down worldwide, girls have not only had their education put on hold; many are also encountering financial stress and violence at home. The ending of this story is not yet written; there are still chances to influence the outcomes when it comes to girls’ re-entry to school. We hope you’ll join us for that.

For now, let’s rewind and take a look at what we’re proud to have achieved last year; this progress is what we are fighting to hold onto today.

Our 10th Birthday Bash, held October 24th in New York City, raised $300,000 to further our mission! Through live pledges in the room, we raised the final $65K of our goal in five minutes, allowing us to open an office in Nairobi, which will double our reach and impact on girls in the region. For the International Day of the Girl on October 11th, we launched the Global Girls’ Bill of Rights with worldwide attention. This declaration of the rights all girls are entitled to, written by girls, for girls generated 150M+ media impressions and girl leaders presented it at the UN twice, to the Deputy Secretary-General (pictured) and to the head of UN Women. STF Summit student.jpg

Days before this, we hosted the 8th Annual STF Summit, which provided hands-on advocacy training to 150 students representing our 200 campus chapters within 15 U.S. states, India, Canada, Nepal, and Guatemala.

In April, we hosted the third annual Girls First: East Africa Summit with our partner Akili Dada in Nairobi, Kenya. Through this flagship professional development event, we’ve trained more than 75 local girls’ organizations from East and West Africa, reaching 11,000 girls in the region. Through the course of the educators’ careers, the effects of these trainings will impact exponential numbers of girls.

After the Girls First Summit, more than 66% of organizations reported that they have adapted or created new initiatives, based on the trainings they received, to better incorporate girls’ voices into their program. An additional 33% report that they have plans to do so in the future. 88% of organizations created or updated their child protection policies to better protect girls, which will benefit more than 9,600 girls.
