Mother figures transform the lives of millions of girls around the world.

In Ethiopia, Mariyamawit (Marye) did not know her biological parents. When she arrived at the Selamta Family Project, an STF Partner, Tiruye became Marye’s house mother—and Tiruye has now been in her life for 10 years as she nears graduation.

Today, Marye says, “My mom gives me comfort, is always there for me, and she encourages me. She is so determined that every child should receive an education.

Tiruye:

“I was married at only 14 years old through an arranged marriage, and I had a baby at 15 years old. I was not happy, so I refused to go back to my husband and had to leave my son… There was this emptiness in my heart that I did not understand, until I became a mother to my children like Marye and our losses connected us. Now, I’ve also been re-connected with my son, too.”
